We welcome all proposals, suggestions and ideas for the conference programme related to the main conference themes at ONLINE EDUCA BERLIN 2012. You are invited to submit proposals:

Each type of submission has a different submission form. Online forms for each submission type are available by clicking through the format description links above.

The online forms can also be reached by using this link and choosing the format you would like to submit, under the heading “Format Type”.

Deadline for receipt of all proposals is June 1st, 2012. Determinations of proposal outcomes will be announced by the end of August, 2012.

Please note, it is a condition of acceptance that successful applicants register for the main two-day ONLINE EDUCA BERLIN conference.

It is also a condition of acceptance that presenters act on potential feedback and comments provided by the Conference Steering Committee, as well as act on feedback provided by their session chairperson, in order to ensure a high quality programme.

All acceptance notifications sent by the conference organisers will provide information on how to register, and only those registering by September 10th, 2012 will be included in the final conference agenda and in the Book of Abstracts. Those making a successful application for inclusion on the conference agenda will be offered a significantly reduced conference registration fee of € 360 excl. VAT (instead of € 790).

Selection process

The content selection process is overseen by the Conference Steering Committee and guided by the feedback we have received from participants at previous conferences, the Conference Advisory Committee and associated organisations.

In previous years, we have received many more proposals and ideas than we were able to include and, as a general rule, approximately one third of all proposals received were accepted. Selection is made on the basis of how relevant the proposal is to the themes of the conference, the experience and knowledge of those making the proposal, whether or not the proposal has been included in the agenda of previous years' conferences, the practicalities of including the proposal within the conference format and the extent to which the proposal can be judged to be innovative and yet offer practical value to conference participants. Please note, special efforts are made to avoid repetition from previous conferences.

To lead a pre-conference workshop, seminar or meeting on Wednesday, November 28th

For several years, the pre-conference agenda programme has included various types of optional organised activities which have proven to be very successful. Not only are such activities excellent opportunities in themselves to learn a new skill, enhance your knowledge or gather information about a specific topic, but they are also extremely valuable pre-conference networking activities in their own right. These activities include:

A full- or half-day Workshop which is typically a very practical session offering participants the opportunity to gain knowledge and insight from leading experts into a specialised field, topic or skill. These small, focused learning sessions offer participants a unique opportunity to develop their skills or knowledge in a particular area. Preference will be given to workshops which are clearly in line with current interests in the field of e-learning and where very practical and interactive activities are proposed. Participants expect that there will be time to discuss the topic, ask questions and share information and experience. The number of participants is limited and workshops selected normally target a maximum of 30 participants.

A full- or half-day Seminar which is typically a knowledge sharing session focused on a specific topic. It normally provides in-depth insight into a particular project or set of projects, an initiative or development in the field of e-learning or an emerging issue being faced by the e-learning community. The emphasis is on knowledge dissemination; the number of participants can vary from 20 to 150 depending on the topic. Seminars can include project dissemination events which are aimed at a public audience, public meetings aimed at building cross-border consortia and special interest groups and marketing events for initiatives, applications or services.

A full- or half-day Meeting targeted to a specific set of participants and so is essentially a private activity not announced on the conference website or in the publicly available documents. Meetings include consortium meetings for European projects and can be arranged for groups of between 10 and 150. Generally these meetings will take place on Wednesday, November 28th, however, in particular cases they can also be arranged during the conference agenda on Thursday, November 29th or Friday, November 30th. Please note it is not the intention of the conference organisers to include any specific content relating to these activities in the published Book of Abstracts.

These pre-conference activities are optional and participants must pre-register. Many require a separate payment by participants which is required at the time of registration. Various costing options are available for each activity depending on the type of activity.

The conference organisers will contact you, if your proposal has been accepted, to make further arrangements.

To give a presentation in a themed session during the main conference

During the conference on Thursday, November 29th and Friday, November 30th there will be a series of parallel presentation sessions addressing the themes of the conference. Presentations proposed should clearly address one of these themes. These parallel sessions provide presenters with an opportunity to share their experience or knowledge in their particular field of expertise and conference participants expect such sessions to provide practical advice and insight.

Presentations time slots vary between 15 and 30 minutes and all those whose proposals have been accepted, will be asked at a later stage to submit a 1500 word extended overview for inclusion in the Book of Abstracts, as well as their presentation slides (if available) for the Conference CD. A template will be provided for this purpose and also for a photo and short biographical description of the presenter (between 200 and 300 words).

All presentation sessions will have a chairperson appointed by the conference organisers prior to the event. The chairperson will be in contact with presenters in the lead-in period to discuss the internal organisation of the session.

To demonstrate a specific pre-market tool, application, service or course in a special area during the main conference

These are real ‘show and tell’ sessions which will include examples of pre-market tools, applications, services and courses that are likely to interest ONLINE EDUCA BERLIN participants. The format for these showcase sessions is highly interactive. Those selected will be allocated a table space where they set up their demonstration.

Before the conference, those showcasing will be invited to provide a short text describing the tool, application or course they are going to show, which will be published in the conference programme.

At the conference, participants attending these sessions will be free to move around the room to find out more about the showcases that interest them most on an informal, one-on-one basis. These sessions will last about three hours each and will involve a significant number of demonstrations. They will take place in an area that resembles a large open market of e-learning products, services and tools and are designed to highlight innovation, excellence and future developments.

Please note, those making demonstrations are expected to bring all equipment and peripherals necessary for giving the demonstration; although technical support will be available, the demonstration should be possible without any support from the conference organisers.

Contributions to the Book of Abstracts are not expected; however, a short and succinct description of the tool or application and the person giving the demonstration will be publicised prior to the conference.

To suggest a topic for a discussion or debate during the main conference

ONLINE EDUCA BERLIN 2011 will feature several discussion and debate opportunities designed to actively involve participants. There are two different formats foreseen for these sessions.

In the first format, we invite people with a strong opinion about a particular topic to put forward their point of view in one of the planned open discussion sessions called “Soapbox Sessions”. If your idea is selected, you will be given a short amount of time to present your point of view and then session participants will be invited to discuss it with you. Suggestions need to be linked to the conference themes and we will group those selected under common themes.

In the second format, we plan to set up entire sessions devoted to a specific discussion topic. For these, we invite you to put forward both the topic and a minimum of three people willing to discuss the topic. We will choose those that fit best within the themes of ONLINE EDUCA BERLIN 2012. Again, suggestions need to be linked to the conference themes and in their proposal forms, applicants need to emphasise how they will promote discussion and debate with other participants.

To suggest a topic for a knowledge exchange session during the main conference

Sometimes called 'Cracker Barrel' sessions, these are 60-minute long sessions where the emphasis is on the exchange of knowledge and networking. They are intended to be informal and informative where participants will introduce themselves and then move on to discuss the topic under discussion. It is an opportunity to share knowledge and ideas about specific projects, to find others who share your interests, to share new ideas or future visions, to pose a question in order to encourage discussion or to look for help with a specific problem. These sessions will be held in relatively small conference spaces and access will be limited to promote discussion.

To suggest a topic for a Learning Café session during the main conference

The purpose of these sessions is to share information and to build on existing knowledge. The format for these sessions will be that after introductions to the themes under discussion, small groups of participants will each discuss a single theme around a round table with a table moderator for about 15 minutes. The table moderator will record the main points raised and issues discussed. The groups of participants will then change tables and the table moderator for each table will introduce the issue summarising the points made by the previous group to the new group who will then continue the discussion and so add to the content of the dialogue. After several rounds of discussions, the main points related to each issue discussed are then presented to the whole group for discussion in the final part of the Learning Café.

To suggest a topic for an OEB Learnshop during the main conference

These sessions mix expert presentations with small group discussions and will typically focus on a single topic. The proposed format for these sessions, lasting between one and three hours, is for them to be led by one or two people expert or highly experienced in a topic relevant to the conference themes. Participants in these sessions will engage in several small round-table discussions, then report back main findings, conclusions or recommendations to the larger group as appropriate to the topic. The main purpose of these sessions will be to encourage participants to voice their own opinion and viewpoint on the specific topic.
